Abstract

This paper addresses a machine learning technique in the context of constitutive modelling. Since it has been proven that multilayer perceptrons with the backprogapation algorithm are capable of approximating any class of functions, studies have been developed with the objective of using it as approximation functions for the nonlinear behaviour of complex material media. This is only possible because neural networks have a powerful adaptability, capability of learning and generalizability. In this context, a multilayer perceptron is trained with stress-strain results from a nonlinear analysis via finite element method with Mazars material in order to develop a neural network-based constitutive model. This implementation is carried out with the help of a recognized machine learning package in order to obtain more accurate results. To validate the proposed constitutive model, the results obtained through the multilayer perceptron are compared with the ones of the finite element numerical analysis.

Abstract

Meshfree methods belonging to the class of Smoothed Point Interpolation Methods (S-PIM) have been shown to provide certain advantages with respect to the standard finite element method (FEM), when dealing with physically nonlinear problems. The present work extends the Cell-Based Smoothed Radial Point Interpolation Method with polynomial reproduction (CS-RPIMp), originally proposed for linear problems, to the case of damage models. The weakened-weak (W2) formulation and peculiar integration scheme which this method is based on have been extended to nonlinear damage models. Some numerical examples of nonlinear problems with different kinds of boundary conditions, performed using different strategies for support nodes selection based on the T-schemes (T4-, T6/3- and T2L-schemes), are presented, aiming to point out the accuracy, convergence and efficiency of the Cell-Based Smoothed Radial Point Interpolation Method with polynomial reproduction in comparison with the standard finite element method.

Abstract

Constitutive models are mechanical-mathematical formulations that describe the behavior of a material. For a complete representation of the medium, these models must be able to reproduce the processes of loading, unloading and reloading. Usually, models for quasi-brittle materials present deterioration of the elastic modulus, while residual strains are not verified. Models for ductile materials, although, have their elastic modulus preserved during unloading and that results in permanent strains. In real materials analysis what is observed is a composition of these two behaviors. The literature presents analytical models to incorporate both hypotheses, developed from the concept of focal point. Traditional formulations usually work with a fixed focal point. Thus, in order to expand existing formulations, this work presents an elastic degradation model associated with cyclic stress-strain laws according to a moving focal point, which varies depending on the deterioration of the material medium.

Abstract

The present work aims to evaluate the performance of the Stable Generalized Finite Element Method (SGFEM), a relatively new approach that derives from a simple modification of enrichment functions used in Generalized/eXtended Finite Element Method (G/XFEM), in the analysis of a three-point bending test. For this, different crack propagation simulations are performed using the standard Heaviside Function, its linear modification as proposed by Gupta et al. [1] and a version that employs a stabilization parameter, presented in Wu and Li [2]. A cohesive crack model is considered and linear elastic material is assumed for the numerical experiments. Equilibrium paths, as well as the scaled condition numbers (SCNs), calculated at each step, are evaluated by SGFEM and compared with the results obtained by G/XFEM. This work is related to a proposal of expansion of the INSANE (INteractive Structural ANalysis Environment) system, an open source project developed at the Structural Engineering Department of the Federal University of Minas Gerais. This platform has enabled the resources that allowed the analysis and discussions carried out in this work.

Abstract

This work presents a comparative study of the application of the Generalized/eXtended Finite Element Method (GFEM) in the solution of cracking problems. Different strategies are performed: Polynomial enrichment strategy with the GFEM and numerical enrichment strategy with and without Stable Generalized Finite Element Method (SGFEM) procedure. The numerical enrichment strategy is based on global-local analysis. For this strategy, the nonlinear analysis is performed in the global problem and a local problem is solved in the end of each converged step. The local solution is used as numerical enrichment for next incremental step of the global problem. This local problem, solved with a fine mesh, is a subdomain of the global problem in the cracking region of the problem. For the application of the polynomial enrichment strategy, the same subdomain of global problem is enriched with prescribed polynomial functions. The smeared cracking model is used as elastic-degradation constitutive model to simulate the behavior of quasi-brittle media. The implementations have been performed in the INSANE (Interactive Structural Analysis Environment) system, a free software developed at Department of Structural Engineering of Federal University of Minas Gerais. Numerical example of a two-dimensional problem (2D) is presented for validation and comparison of the strategies. Besides, the results are compared with experimental data and reference solutions obtained via classical Finite Element Method (FEM).

Abstract

Smoothed point interpolation methods (S-PIM), when compared with the standard finite element method (FEM) in the study of static linear problems, present interesting results due certain characteristics of their formulation. In general, meshfree methods have been shown to be more accurate and efficient. The proposed study aims to present a comparison between the Node-Based Smoothed Radial Point Interpolation Method with polynomial reproduction (NS-RPIMp), Edge-Based Smoothed Radial Point Interpolation Method with polynomial reproduction (ES-RPIMp) and Cell-Based Smoothed Radial Point Interpolation Method with polynomial reproduction (CS-RPIMp), applied to static linear-elastic problems. Several numerical simulations, performed using differents strategies for support nodes selection based on the T-schemes (T3-, T4-, T6/3- and T2L-schemes), are presented, providing a relevant amount of results that allow to understand the behaviour of each one of these methods and
schemes with respect to the accuracy and convergence rate.

Abstract

Numerous materials, although they appear macroscopically homogeneous, usually present a heterogeneous microstructure that directly influences the structural behavior. The phenomenological approach followed by the classical continuum mechanics does not individually accounts for this influence, which can be significant, for example, in cases where the structure or the specimen under analysis is small compared to its microstructure or when the material media has a complex microstructure. Within the framework of continuum mechanics, so-called generalized continuum theories are particularly suited to deal with the above issues incorporating the microstructural behavior on the formulation. The micromorphic theory is included in this general class of generalized continua and, more specifically, in the group that incorporates additional degrees of freedom to the material particles.Another aspect of generalized continua is its ability to address the issue of localization in quasi-brittle materials modeled as elastic-degrading media as a result of its non-local character. In order to allow the representation of quasi-brittle media with the micromorphic continuum theory, this work presents a formulation for scalar-isotropic damage models for a micromorphic continuum in the constitutive models framework of the INSANE system, initially conceived for classical media and later expanded for the micropolar continuum. This implementation is based on the tensorial format of a unified constitutive models formulation and homogenization techniques to obtain the micromorphic constitutive relations.

Abstract

This work presents a novel methodology to deal with some drawbacks related to crack propagation in physically nonlinear problems in the context of the Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM). The GFEM associates Finite Element Method shape functions to local approximation functions that describe, for example, the discontinuity from Fracture Mechanics cohesive crack problems. In this case, numerical integration must be adapted for properly dealing with the non-polynomial integrand of the weak form of the boundary value problem. A common alternative to consider the discontinuity is the employment of the subdivision of elements, in the integration points are changed according to the cited strategy. Although a very efficient procedure in linear problems, it leads to the loss of the state constitutive variables history, responsible for indicating the degradation level in physically nonlinear materials. A new strategy is here proposed, based on the nonlocal approach to recover the evolution of the state constitutive variables in the integration points. A numerical example is provided to validate and prove the efficiency of the proposed methodology. The computational implementation and analysis are performed in the open source software INSANE (Interactive Structural Analysis Environment), developed by the Structural Engineering Department of Federal University of Minas Gerais.

Abstract

The Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM) was developed in order to overcome some limitations inherent to the Finite Element Method (FEM), related to the defects propagation, presence of large deformations or even in the description of high gradients of state variables. The GFEM enriches the space of the polynomial FEM solution with a priori known information based on the concept of Partition of Unit (PoU). Certain obstacles of nonlinear analysis can be mitigated with the GFEM, and damage and plasticity fronts can be accurately represented. In this context, the global-local approach to the GFEM (GFEM global-local) was proposed. The success of its application to problems of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics is already proven, but its extension to the simulation of collapse of structures made of quasi-brittle media is still a vast field to be researched. Here, a coupling strategy is presented based on the global-local GFEM to describe the deterioration process of quasi-brittle media, such as concrete, in the context of Continuous Damage Mechanics. The numerical solution used to enrich the global problem, represented by a coarse mesh, is obtained through physically nonlinear analysis performed only in the local region where damage propagation occurs, represented by constitutive models. The linear analysis of the global region is performed considering the incorporation of local damage through the global-local enrichment functions and damage state mapped from local problem. Numerical examples of three-point bending notched concrete beams have been presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach and the obtained results were compared with the experimental results and with the ones obtained with standard GFEM. Two constitutive models were applied to represent the concrete in the local region: smeared crack model and microplane model.

Abstract

In damage models, cracks are considered in a smeared way, without any geometric representation of the region where the crack takes place, and the energy released is used in crack growth that is controlled by the energy fracture parameter. Phase-field models consider a diffuse and smooth crack that belongs to a certain volume region, where a function describes the crack density. In that region each point has a field variable that quantifies the material degradation. The phase-field techniques allows to detect crack paths and its bifurcation without having a pre-existent crack. The purpose of this work is to present some phase-field models implemented in the INSANE (Interactive Structural ANalysis Environment system) software, an structural analysis open-source software developed by at the Structural Engineering department (DEES) of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). This work opens a new research line inside the INSANE Project. Some preliminary results will be presented.

Abstract

Meshfree Methods have been used as alternatives to Finite Element Method, due to the flexibility in building conforming approximations. Another attractive feature is the capacity of obtaining approximate solutions of high regularity. Such characteristics can be successfully used to describe state variables based on the derivatives of the problem solution and responsible for representing the nonlinear behavior of structures of quasi-brittle material. On the other hand, the lack of the Kronecker-delta property, a more complex computation of the shape functions and numerical integration problems represent drawbacks that can overburden the computational analysis. In nonlinear analysis, the time processing becomes an important issue to be considered. Aiming to conciliate the efficiency of finite element analysis with the flexibility of meshfree methods, coupling techniques for both methods have been proposed, especially in cases where the nonlinear phenomenon is confined in a small part of the structure. Here, a new coupling strategy is proposed based on the Global-local Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM-gl) to simulate damage propagation in quasi-brittle media. The global domain of the structure is represented by a coarse mesh of finite elements. The region of damage propagation defines the local domain, represented by a set of nodes of the meshfree approach called Element Free Galerkin Method (EFG). This local discretization is responsible for providing a numerically obtained function used to enrich the approximate solution of the global problem. Numerical examples in two-dimensional domain are presented to discuss how the meshfree method can efficiently describe the damage propagation, while the global behavior of the structure is represented by the enriched finite element solution.

Abstract

Due to the non-local character embedded in their formulation, meshfree methods belonging to the class of Smoothed Point Interpolation Methods (S-PIMs) have been recently shown to possess certain regularization properties when applied to localization problems. Since meshfree methods usually provide only a weak regularization effect, the combination with other regularization strategies is often necessary. The present work aims to exploit the regularization properties of S-PIMs strategies in the analysis of quasi-brittle media with scalar damage models; a stronger regularization effect is obtained combining the meshfree approach with the micropolar continuum theory, another well-known regularization strategy. The basic theoretical and computational aspects of the application of two S-PIM strategies, the Edge-Based Smoothed Point Interpolation Method (ES-PIM) and Node-Based Smoothed Point Interpolation Method (NS-PIM), to micropolar damage models are discussed, and numerical simulations of two plain concrete experimental tests are presented.

Abstract

This work presents an automation of the global-local strategy under the Generalized Finite Element Method approach, evaluating its performance in the analysis of two-dimensional problems of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. An automated strategy for building local problems, defined in order to follow the crack growth path, is proposed. Solutions of the local problems, obtained with reduced user interference, enriches a single global problem. The automated creation of local problems significantly reduces the time spent in the simulation, which can be quite high for problems involving the propagation of defects. The implementation was carried out as an expansion of the INSANE (Interactive Structural Analysis Environment) system, a free software project developed in the Department of Structural Engineering of the Federal University of Minas Gerais. The proposed approach is validated by the numerical simulation of problems with different characteristics, seeking the extraction of stress intensity factors for opening modes I and II. Influences of the global-local analysis cycles and polynomial enrichments in the global problem are considered.

Abstract

Materials that, like concrete, possess a heterogeneous microstructure, are characterized by behaviours at the macroscale that are difficult to be represented with standard continuum descriptions. Generalized continua models, due to their enriched kinematical description, are well-suited for the representation of microstructural effects. The main limitation to the use of generalized models is the presence of additional material parameters, difficult to be obtained through experiments. The present work deals with the definition of the two additional parameters of the micropolar continuum theory, using a numerical homogenization strategy. The main aim is, then, to obtain an equivalent micropolar macromedium starting from a random heterogeneous microstructure. This paper focuses on a homogenization strategy originally conceived for periodic microstructures, and presents a preliminary investigation on its extension to randon heterogeneous microstructures. The theoretical aspects are discussed, and some initial numerical results are presented.

Abstract

This paper is intended as a numerical quali-quantitative study of convergence, spurious modes and computing time for thin and thick plate elements, under full and reduced integration, with basis on Reissner-Mindlin plate theory. Simulations have been run using the INSANE system. From the convergence results, a good performance of reduced integration in the thin plate is noticed, especially when a Q4 element is introduced, along with a new way to solve the shear locking in this case of thickness, by using full integration with elements of higher order and small dimensions. In the thick plate, reduced integration with refined mesh and lower order elements, such as Q4 and Q9, is also an alternative in cases in which higher order elements with full integration are not possible. Each one of these different possibilities of carrying out the same convergence analysis performs differently, in terms of spurious modes and time. It is possible to conclude that there is no ideal path in the analysis of plate finite elements. Therefore, a good balance between the two last parameters in the study becomes useful in making the best choice in every single simulation to be run.

Abstract

The widespread use of reinforced concrete structures leads to the need of developing analysis models that are specific for this type of structure and can provide reliable results. For the development of these models, it should be considered that the reinforced concrete is composed by two different materials, which leads to a more complex behavior. In this context, models based on the Finite Element Method have been proving to be efficient resources by being able to provide satisfactory results for the analysis of this type of structure. Usually, the modeling of reinforced concrete structures considers that there is compatibility of strains between steel and concrete. However, this premise is not sufficient to represent the behavior of some structures, in which there are regions that the bond stress is high and occurs damage of the concrete in the vicinity of the steel-concrete interface, which leads to the reinforcement slip. In this cases, the phenomenon of the bond-slip takes place, compromising the transfer of efforts. In order to address the need to consider the bond-slip phenomenon, the present work present an interactive graphic interface implemented in the INSANE system, which supports the analysis of reinforced concrete structures applying the discrete and embedded reinforcement models. Abstract

The present work concerns the inclusion of functionalities into the free software INSANE – INteractive Structural ANalysis Environment for the physically non-linear thermal analysis in solid bodies by the Finite Element Method when the physical properties of the material are temperature dependent. INSANE is a multi-platform object-oriented computational system being developed at the Federal University of Minas Gerais – UFMG. Once the physical properties are temperature dependent, Newton’s iterative method is used to calculate the desired solution. The implementation was tested comparing the numerical results to analytical solutions available in the literature. The segmentation and generalization of the INSANE’s numerical core allowed the reuse of the existing classes to support the software expansion.

Abstract

On a sufficiently small scale any material is heterogeneous and this medium non homogeneity may be understood as the cause of complex mechanical behavior of a large range of materials used in engineering, phenomena that may vary from simple stress concentration induction to an increase of medium damage. In case of brittle materials, for example, this is the straightforward reason of the non linear response obtained. For linear medium (or elastoplastic) this characteristic may distort the distribution of internal field domain entirely, inducing areas with higher strain localization. In this manner, is justified a study focused on the capacity of introducing this material characteristic in a numerical analyze, by developing computational strategies appropriately, or by a deep evaluation of computational numerical methods utilized. The introduction of heterogeneity in a simple Finite Element Method (FEM) model may be explicit, by modeling the material mesoscale internal morphology, utilizing specific particle distribution algorithms, or implicit, with the random assignment of materials properties over the domain. This article aims to discuss the influence of materials heterogeneity in FEM analysis, in which the approaches mentioned before for the medium heterogeneity incorporation are integrated to the numerical experiments by different computational strategies. Bi dimensional examples in plane stress state are presented. It is highlighted the different mesh treatment, and is discussed their individual performance. This work has been carried out within the INSANE system (INteractive Structural Analysis Environment), a free software developed at the Federal University of Minas Gerais-Brazil.

Abstract

The Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM) was consolidated in the scientific field as a very useful tool in the resolution of complex structural models using an effective approximate approach to represent the existence of cracks and other micro-defects. This is a non-conventional formulation of the Finite Element Method (FEM), in that there is an expansion of the solution space from the use of enrichment functions associated with the nodes. The enrichment functions can be singular functions derived from analytic deductions, polynomial functions, or even functions resulting from other solution processes, such as the Global-Local strategy. The INSANE (INteractive Structural ANalysis Environment) is a computational platform of the Department of Structural Engineering (DEES) of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and aims to analyze structures of engineering interest. In its current version, it is able to solve problems through several analysis models of any dimension using GFEM. This work proposes the expansion of the system to consider the possibility of using different enrichment functions in three-dimensional models, such as those obtained under the Global-Local technique approach. Numerical examples from the Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics are presented to validate the proposed implementation. Thus, it is demonstrated the efficiency of the analysis of three-dimensional models that present stress fields containing singularities using the Generalized Finite Element Method, allied to the Global-Local technique, and it is therefore suggested that this methodology be applied to models with even more complex configurations from the spatial point of view.

Abstract

The present work shares the new features included in the open source software INSANE (Interactive Structural Analysis Environment) for managing and solving multiphysics engineering problems. The implementation described in this paper focuses on the thermomechanical problem when the material’s physical properties are temperature dependent and the problem is analyzed accordingly to the Finite Element Method (FEM). The suggested framework is based on a new entity, called Simulation Manager, responsible for setting up the analysis parameters for each physics, for controlling the solution process and for managing the data to be transferred from one analysis to the other. Both analysis are carried out using the same discrete model. Since the software is written according to the Object Oriented Programming, the existing resources for solving single-physics problems could be combined to minimize code repetition. The implementation was tested and validated by solving problems whose analytical solutions are available in the literature.

Abstract

The present work presents the solution of a structure model under plane stress conditions and with material non-linearity using the Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM) allied to the global-local strategy of analysis. In the implemented mechanism, a local problem is extracted from the global domain, around of a region where there is a greater concentration of deformations, refined and solved with imposition of Dirichlet boundary conditions, originating from the global problem. Nonlinear analysis is performed in the global model and a local problem is solved at the end of each converged incremental step. For the local solution it is used the secant stiffness and the current state of the material media, resulting from the transfer of the constitutive variables between the two models considered. The local solution obtained enriches the global problem using the prerogatives of GFEM. The Newton-Raphson incremental-iterative process with different control methods is adopted. Constitutive models and appropriate material laws for representing elastic-degrading media are used. The computational implementations have been performed into the numerical core of INSANE system (INteractive Structural ANalysis Environment), a free software developed by the Department of Structural Engineering of the Federal University of Minas Gerais.

Abstract

The INSANE (Interactive Structural Analysis Software) is being developed by the Structural Engineering Department of Federal University of Minas Gerais (DEES/UFMG) since 2002. Through these years, the system has evolved from a simple 2D frame element analysis software to a very complex system, with many different methods, elements, constitutive models and solution types. However, the system also suffered from a well known phenomena called software erosion: a slow deterioration of software performance over time. In this paper, the INSANE system will be briefly described and a diagnosis of its actual state will be presented. Software erosion causes, consequences and possible solutions or preventions will be discussed.

Abstract

The Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM) is a numerical technique suitable to solve a wide range of engineering continuum mechanics problems. Dating back to the mid-1990’s, the GFEM is a relatively new numerical method which incorporates enrichment functions to the partition of unity and, by doing so, is more flexible and less mesh-dependent than the standard finite element formulation. In particular, it is a convenient tool in the study of heat transfer phenomena, being able to provide numerical solutions for the distribution of thermal energy inside a domain subjected to high temperature gradients. In that sense, this work presents the computational implementation of the GFEM to thermal problems. Validation examples of two-dimensional steady state conduction models are presented in order to illustrate the performance of the method in these cases. The work were executed in the INSANE system (INteractive Structural ANalysis Environment), a free software of high-level scientific research on numerical methods developed in the Department of Structural Engineering of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Abstract

The failure analysis in structures is extremely important since it allows to evaluate the safety degree and the integrity of structural systems. However, despite the increasing use of numerical methods in the study of material failures in the last years, the boundary element method is still little used when compared to domain methods. Thus, in this work it is analyzed the failure mechanics in some classical problems through the continuum strong discontinuity approach. In this way, it is used the implicit formulation of the boundary element method for nonlinear problems to shown the dependence of the step size when the cells with embedded discontinuity are generated only after step convergence or during any iteration, respectively, in the incremental-iterative process. For this purpose, the same problem was analyzed considering these two cases and also different numbers of steps. It was verified that the results are coincident for all numbers of steps considered in the simulations when cells are generated during any iteration, showing step size independence in this case, while the same is not true for the case of cells generated only after convergence, in which a large numbers of steps is required for well accuracy.

Abstract

The advent of computer methods combined with the large amount of studies related to the structural engineering field, and, more specifically, related to structures in reinforced concrete, leads to the development of numerical models that improve the prediction of the behavior of these structures. Among several developed models, the models based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) have shown to be powerful tools for the analysis of reinforced, simple and prestressed concrete structures. In this context, the inclusion of the reinforcement in the analysis of reinforced concrete structures can be made using three different models: discrete reinforcement model, embedded reinforcement model and smeared reinforcement model. In the first two models, the phenomenon of bond-slip can be included, making them more realistic and, therefore, more popular. In this sense, this paper presents an interactive graphical application for modeling reinforced concrete structures by FEM, allowing to considering the bond-slip phenomenon. The reinforcement is incorporated through discrete model, with bond-slip phenomenon simulated by nodal springs or by contact elements. The INSANE system (INteractive Structural ANalysis Environment), a free software developed at the Department of Structural Engineering of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, is used in the implementation.

Abstract

Strain localization is an important issue in the numerical modelling of the physically non-linear behaviour of quasi-brittle materials. Scalar damage models, and the wider class of elastic-degrading models, commonly used for the representation of quasi-brittle media, may suffer for material instabilities due to their strain-softening behaviour. When analyzed numerically with the finite element method, a set of pathological phenomena may appear, hence affecting the quality of the simulations. The micropolar continuum formulation has been showed, in the past, to be a valid alternative for the mitigation of localization issues in elasto-plastic models and, recently, also in the case of scalar damage models. This papers aims to investigate the regularization properties of the micropolar theory when applied to a scalar damage model, and to evaluate the effects of the micropolar material parameters (the Cosserat’s shear modulus and the internal bending length) on the onset of material instabilities. Analytical investigations are performed, in order to evaluate the onset of material instabilities with a proper localization indicator. Numerical simulations with the finite element method are also provided, in order to show the regularization properties of the adopted formulation.

Abstract

All the materials are heterogeneous in some sufficiently small length scale and in the case of quasi-brittle media it is exactly the inhomogeneous nature of the continuum that accounts for many of the phenomena captured in structural level, especially the prominent nonlinear mechanical behavior. In that sense, this work proposes the adoption of the Generalized Finite Element Method associated with the Global-Local methodology (GFEM-GL) to build a different multiscale strategy able to model general strain softening materials, especially quasibrittle media and its main archetype, the concrete. In an incremental-iterative scheme, the solution of an initial global boundary value problem (macroscale) generates boundary conditions to local domains (mesoscale). Then the solution of the inhomogeneous local problems numerically creates enrichment functions for the global domain and the constitutive response of the non-linear material. Lastly, the enriched global problem is processed again. At the current stage, the material morphology has been modeled using a stochastic-heuristic algorithm and numerically treated by the Finite Element Method, one of the many possible options to handle the local/meso problem. The work has been carried out within the INSANE system (INteractive Structural Analysis Environment), a free software developed at the Federal University of Minas Gerais-Brazil.

Abstract

The conventional (local) constitutive modelling of materials exhibiting strain softening behaviour is suceptive to a spurious mesh dependence caused by numerically induced strain localization. Also, for very refined meshes, numerical instabilities may be verified, mainly if the simulations are performed by the boundary element method. An alternative to overcome such difficulties is the adoption of the so called non-local constitutive models. In this approach, some internal variables of the constitutive model in a single point are averaged considering its values of the neighbouring points. In this paper, the implicit formulation of the boundary element method for physically non linear problems is used with non-local isotropic damage models. It is shown that the analysis become more stable in comparison to the case of a local application of the same models and that the results recover the desired objectiveness to mesh refinement.

Abstract

This work aims at the implementation of a graphical and interactive environment for obtaining interactive diagrams of reinforced concrete sections. The section may have any polygonal geometry and any steel bars arrangement. The section can be solicited from normal force and moments, which is enough to represent from a simple flexion to an oblique flexion. To find the position of the neutral line is necessary to obtain both the translation and the rotation of the neutral line through an iterative process. For each position of the neutral line which satisfies the equilibrium, the solicitant stress state is calculated and compared to the given one until they become equal to each other within a certain tolerance. The implementation of the graphic environment follows the Objected Oriented Programming methodology using Java. The obtained diagrams are based on the discretization of the section into a list of points on its plane.
